The research group "Basics of Electrochemistry" is concerned with the experimental study of electrolyte–electrode interfaces, using in situ methods whose resolution approaches the atomic level as closely as possible. If it succeeds in this way in establishing a correlation between the electrode structure at the atomic level and the most important electrode processes, it will become possible to identify further ways of optimizing the energy storage system.
Electrode processes and the electrode structure are observed simultaneously during the charging and discharging processes. Electrochemical methods of measurement are employed for this purpose, such as cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, and measurements using quartz microbalances, which are used in nonaqueous electrolytes (organic or ionic liquids that are characteristic of energy storage systems). These methods make it possible to discriminate the simpler individual elementary processes that make up the complex electrode processes.
The structure of the electrode’s surface is imaged using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Ideally it is possible to establish a relationship between the structural changes observed in the electrode’s surface and the elementary processes measured electrochemically, which provides new indications as to mechanism at play in the processes on the surface. A fundamental understanding of these features can point to new ways to optimize the system.
The research group Multiscale Modeling at HIU is well connected with research partners from academia and industry, including various national and international electrochemistry institutes. Internally, the group works closely with the research groups Elementary Processes, Electrochemical Multiphysics Modeling and Solid-State Chemistry.
