Smart Batteries

December 30th, 2022

A major European research project called SPARTACUS wants to ensure that batteries become smart in the future. This should work via different sensors on the batteries and the battery management system. But what can smart batteries do? Our guests Gerhard Domann from the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research (ISC) and Dr. Andreas Hutter from the Swiss research institute CSEM expect the smart sensors to improve charging behavior and maximize battery life. Optimized battery condition detection and battery function will enable safe but fast charging – much faster than previously possible.

The focus of the project is on mechanical and acoustic sensors, complemented by temperature sensors. The sensor data then feeds a battery management system, which compares the data with a data pool and thus optimizes the charging and discharging processes and the load on individual cells in the battery module.
