First German factory for battery electrolyte – Dr. Beltrop (E-Lyte) & Dr. Hofmann (KIT)

September 18th, 2023

It is the best-protected material recipe for a #battery: the #electrolyte. Consisting of solvents, conductive salts and additives, it enables ion mobility between the positive and negative poles within a battery. Without it there would be no ion flow – and therefore no battery! The electrolyte is THE key component for outstanding #battery performance, long #lifespan and sufficient #safety of a cell.

While the battery world marvels at countless research successes on cathodes and anodes, electrolytes generally seem to be somewhat out of the spotlight – at least until solid-state batteries are available.

The E-Lyte company sees it completely differently! The company specifically produces and develops liquid electrolytes. E-Lyte already offers thousands of different electrolyte formulations that are tailored to specific anode and cathode chemistries (NMC, LFP, sodium-ion batteries). Dr. Kolja Beltrop (founder of E-Lyte) emphasizes in the podcast that the electrolyte properties can be changed and adapted in many ways. These include flammability, toxicity, price, sustainability, stability and service life. The battery researcher Dr. Andreas Hofmann (KIT) agrees: The electrolyte is probably the most underestimated component of the battery.
