BEV trucks vs. Hydrogen trucks – Dr. Jürgen Wagner (MAN)

August 20th, 2023

Dr. Jürgen Wagner (Vice President MAN Truck & Bus SE) explains his company’s electrification strategy. In fact, the Munich-based company is pursuing a three-pronged approach: The manufacturer of commercial vehicles and trucks is developing both hydrogen trucks and battery-powered trucks. So far, the business with diesel-powered trucks is still the main component of the vehicle manufacturer.

It was only in June 2023 that MAN officially received 4 grants totaling 24 million euros from the Bavarian state government. This sum is “part of technology funding” for the development of high-voltage batteries for electric trucks and electric buses. Sometimes the further development of #fuel cells and hydrogen technologies is also supported.

Large-scale production of high-voltage batteries is scheduled to start next year (early 2025). Until then, the battery systems will continue to be manufactured in small series. The cells – mostly #NMC battery cells from China – will then be installed in almost 100,000 high-voltage packs every year, which will equip around 25,000 trucks per year. In this podcast you will learn about the biggest challenges faced by MAN’s customers, how the manufacturer deals with battery guarantees and, above all, what solutions the new charging infrastructure (#megawatt #charging) has in store for trucks.
