The company CMBlu praises its organic flow batteries as environmentally friendly stationary storage for renewable energies, which should also be inexpensive and easily scalable. The organic flow technology is intended to combine the high energy density of solid-state batteries with the arbitrary scalability of capacity and performance of flow batteries and does not use rare raw materials. The material used – lignin – can be obtained as a by-product from paper mills.

It is poured into two separate tanks and brought together in a special facility for a biochemical reaction. According to the company, 50 MW at 250 MWh costs around €363 per kWh and can withstand more than 10,000 charging cycles. The battery system is designed as a multi-cell stack and is primarily suitable for stationary storage applications. Thanks to its modularity, it can easily be scaled up to the gigawatt range. We check these announcements with Prof. Birgit Esser from the University of Ulm.
